Have you ever walked the beach near Stinky's and found the water running the color of sweet tea, cutting a new channel straight through the sand into the Gulf? If you live in Dune Allen long enough, you will see it. Which lake does it to you, and how often, depends entirely on which side of the neighborhood you call home.
Dune Allen sits on five named coastal dune lakes, a type of freshwater body rare enough to exist in only a handful of places on the planet: Walton County, plus scattered pockets of Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar, and Oregon, according to Walton County's own coastal dune lakes page. Moving west to east along the corridor, the county lists them as Morris, Campbell, Stallworth, Allen, and Oyster. That order is not just trivia. It roughly maps two different neighborhoods hiding inside one.
The Preserve Side and the Public Side
Topsail Hill Preserve State Park runs along Dune Allen's far western edge, with 3.2 miles of protected beach and dunes that rise 25 feet above the sand. That boundary lines up closely with where Morris, Campbell, and Stallworth sit on the county's list, and three of the county's fifteen coastal dune lakes fall under state park management rather than sitting exposed along the open highway. Geography puts Dune Allen's westernmost trio squarely inside that line.
Allen and Oyster fall on the other side of it, out past the preserve, along the developed stretch of 30A where Stinky's Fish Camp, the Dune Allen Regional Beach Access, and the footbridge that carries bikers and walkers across Oyster Lake all sit within a few hundred yards of each other.
A quick reference, west to east:
- Morris Lake — inside or bordering the Topsail Hill Preserve line, minimal public access
- Campbell Lake — same protected stretch, quiet and largely undeveloped shoreline
- Stallworth Lake — westernmost of the three, rarely visited outside the preserve's trail system
- Allen Lake — fronts Stinky's Fish Camp and the Dune Allen Regional Beach Access, high foot traffic
- Oyster Lake — spanned by a public footbridge along the Timpoochee Trail route, a regular stop for cyclists and birdwatchers
That split explains something residents already sense without being able to name it. Two of Dune Allen's lakes behave like public spectacle. Three behave like they are barely there.
What an Outfall Actually Is
Every coastal dune lake stores fresh water within a few feet of the Gulf, separated only by a ridge of sand. Rain, groundwater, and small feeder streams fill the lake until it clears what the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance calls a critical high water level, and once it does, the lake stops waiting. It cuts through the berm in an event locals and biologists both call an outfall, and empties its stored fresh water into the Gulf in a matter of hours. Salt water often pushes back through that same channel on the next tide, so a lake that looked entirely fresh on a Tuesday can carry saltwater fish and plants within its banks by the weekend.
The Basin Alliance, the nonprofit that monitors these lakes for Walton County, is direct about the variation between them: each lake has its own personality, shaped by its size, its watershed, and the characteristics of its outlet. Outlet openings differ widely in length, frequency, and duration from one lake to the next, which is exactly why treating "coastal dune lake" as one uniform phenomenon misses what actually matters to someone living beside one.
Two Documented Breaches, Two Different Stories
The clearest illustration of that variation sits several miles east along 30A, at Deer Lake. In February 2024, a WMBB news crew captured the moment a feeder stream at Deer Lake grew strong enough to punch through the sand on its own. Within two days, the trickle had widened into a channel roughly 25 yards across, running the lake's tannic, pine-stained water straight into the Gulf. Walton County extension agent Dr. Laura Tiu noted that Lake Powell opens frequently and Western Lake at Grayton Beach opens fairly regularly, while other lakes barely open at all. Frequency belongs to the individual lake, not to some countywide rule.
Dune Allen has its own version of that story. In July 2024, WMBB reported that Oyster Lake had broken through near the West Allen Beach Access, water moving hard enough that beachgoers grabbed boogie boards to ride the outgoing surf. The exact trigger was never confirmed. One report pointed to kids digging in the sand and accidentally cutting the channel themselves, which is plausible precisely because Oyster Lake sits so close to foot traffic. A lake tucked inside a state park boundary rarely has anyone standing nearby to give it a hand.
If you catch one forming, the guidance from local coverage of these events is consistent:
Stay well back from the current, keep children and pets away from the outflow, and call the South Walton Fire District if the breach looks sudden or the water is moving with real force. Fresh water draining out and Gulf water pushing back in creates currents that can catch swimmers off guard even close to shore.
Building a Week Around the Water
None of this requires special effort to notice. The Timpoochee Trail, the paved path that starts at Dune Allen's western edge and runs the length of 30A, passes right along the Oyster Lake footbridge, a spot already popular for sunrise photos and birdwatching. Ride or walk it a few times a month and you will clock the lake's water level without trying, pressed high against the dune line one week and calm the next.
Allen Lake earns its keep the same way, minus the exercise. Stinky's Fish Camp sits right on its bank, and the restaurant's Sunday Jazz Brunch, all-day oyster bar, and Cajun-leaning menu give residents a standing reason to sit beside the water rather than driving out just to check on it. A stop next door at Stinky's Bait Shack, or barbecue at 3 Sons a short drive away, rounds out a Sunday that already has you facing the lake.
The preserve side runs on a slower rhythm. Morris, Campbell, and Stallworth suit a kayak launch or a walk through Topsail Hill Preserve's pine forest more than a lakeside brunch. Golfers get a version of the same view at Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club, whose fairways run within sight of Vue on 30A, the restaurant built into the old Santa Rosa Beach Club clubhouse on the dune above.
Anchor the week with Gulf Place's farmers market, open year round on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesday evenings from 4 to 7 p.m. It sits close enough to both lake clusters that a market run doubles as a lake check, produce in one hand and an eye on the water level in the other.
Understanding why Dune Allen's lakes behave the way they do will not change your morning walk, but it changes what you notice on it. The next time the water past Stinky's runs dark and fast, or the footbridge over Oyster Lake floods a little higher than usual, you will know exactly why one lake is putting on a show while the other three keep their business quiet behind the dunes at Topsail Hill.
